Over 50 kayakers from around the world gathered in the state of Kerala, India, for the 2016 Malabar River Festival. The event has something for kayakers of all ability levels. Competitors raced in a slalom-style creekboat race, a boater cross, and a Class V time trial in front of an audience of 1,500 enthusiastic onlookers. With “enforced dancing,” a slack line over the river, and a huge crowd, the event is Asia’s largest whitewater festival. Located near the southern tip of India, the Malabar is fast becoming a popular destination for paddlers as events like the festival gather paddlers to the area.
