The Unlimited Dusi Canoe Marathon is actually a kayak race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban in South Africa, held annually each winter since 1951. It is run over three days along the Msunduzi River, more commonly known as the Dusi (or Duzi) river. The 2011 edition just went down over the weekend, and photographer Jacques Marais provided a photo gallery for C&K.

Day 1 is 45 km and includes roughly 15 km of portaging with boats, with shorter portaging sections on Day 2 and 3. Day 2 is also 45 km and ends with a 10 km stretch on flat water on the Inanda Dam. Day 3 is 35 km of clean cold water let out from the dam, but Days 2 and 3 also features several sections of large rapids. More info at Dusi.org, and at Martin Dreyer’s CHANGE A LIFE website.
