After sailing halfway around the world, Tyler Bradt and his Wizard’s Eye cohorts struck paddling gold this summer in Madagascar.
This episode marks the final of four episodes debuting on C&K which document the crew’s journeys to powerful, unknown rivers deep within Africa’s massive island nation. This installment from Bradt’s Madagascar leg (No. 12 in the ongoing series charting the Montana native’s five-year circumnavigation project) follows Bradt and paddling partners Will Pruett and photographer-kayaker Benjamin Hjort on a multi-day, first-descent exploration of the northern Sandratsio River marked by muddy, grueling, and unexpected jungle portages.
It’s the latest chapter of what C&K Editor-at-large Eugene Buchanan describes in the Digital Feature Whitewater on the Wind (appearing originally in Canoe & Kayak‘s December issue, available on newsstands and for digital download now) as a “five-year quest to sail a 42-foot floating toy chest named the Wizards Eye around the world in search of all things adrenaline, from BASE-jumping to surfing to spearfishing to standup paddling, and of course, kayaking. Lots of kayaking.”
