Kayakers continue taking “crossover boats,” to new lengths. In the 9- to 11-foot range and built for both touring and moderate whitewater, this class of boats offers everyman accessibility: retractable skegs for straight tracking, comfortable outfitting and ample dry-hatch storage for extended tours. Mountain Mind Collective’s Brendan Wells tested out Dagger’s Katana 10.4 this winter on a stretch he knows well: the Green Truss section of Washington’s White Salmon River. “I love the feeling of keeping my speed through everything and not being concerned of getting spun out as easily as in a short boat,” says Wells. “Rather, I focus on taking fewer, precise strokes to keep on-line, and getting my bow up as best as possible through holes and ledges.”
