OAK HARBOR, WA – NOVEMBER 9, 2011 – Nearly 200 racers in kayaks, outrigger canoes and paddleboards, along with dozens of safety crew and volunteers, will congregate at Bowman Bay in Deception Pass State Park on December 3rd & 4th for the 6th Annual Deception Pass Dash.

The race originated with the idea to start the racers just before the predicted slack current in the Pass, and challenge them to sprint through the briefly-calm water before the current gets too strong. Slower racers would face building current against them and might struggle or even have to turn back.

The Inaugural Dash in 2006 drew about 30 racers, and has grown each year with over 180 competing in 2010. “This race is on everyone’s calendar now”, said Oak Harbor’s Bill Walker of Ruby Creek Boathouse LLC, host of the Dash. “Racers look forward to it all year.”

Walker has teamed with event Presenting Sponsor Outdoor Adventure Center, a paddling outfitter based in Index, WA, recruiting paddle industry professionals to present their goods to the public, including free instructional clinics and demonstration time all day on Saturday December 3rd. Guests can try out kayaks, surfskis, SUPs, and outrigger canoes in the protected water of Bowman Bay, and sample the gear and skills required to race. The Dash will start about 10:20am on Sunday December 4th. Spectators are welcome but are encouraged to check the event web site first for “spectator information” as parking at Bowman Bay will be at a premium.

The event is also a benefit for two deserving nonprofits: Washington Water Trails Association and Medical Safety Net of North Whidbey. A portion of each racer’s entry fee, and all the proceeds of a gear raffle sponsored by dozens of generous paddlesports industry members, will be split between these two agencies.
