KayakFishMag.com contributor Robert Field of YakFish TV competed in the 2016 Extreme Kayak Fishing Sailfish Smack Down Jan. 30 to 31 and along the way kept social media abreast of the developments at the Pompano Beach tournament, including posts on the Facebook pages of Kayak Fish and Yak Fish TV.
At the Captain’s Party Friday night to kick off the event, Robert chose to interview famed tournament kayak angler Austin Collins to get his take on what would be the winning tactics during the event. Collins answered “Fishing deep.”
Collins also should have said, “Catch one early” because the very next morning he went out and by 9:07 a.m. was already on the board with a sailfish released from his kayak. Not only that, Collins would end up going into overtime on the very last day to pull victory and three grand out of the hat with a fish hooked up during legal fishing time and released at 3:04 p.m., four minutes after official lines out at 3. As long as a fish is reported as hooked up before lines out, it counts in the tournament.
Fields, who says he learned a lot at the tournament and can’t wait to fish the next one, came up empty this time around. He’s back on the road and you can expect to see him catching plenty of fish in the months to come.
Still, maybe Robert should have gone to Las Vegas instead of Pompano Beach. Who does he have for the Super Bowl?
