The legendary rains of the Pacific Northwest slam into the Cascade Mountains every few weeks in the winter, producing high flows in the Skykomish River valley along US Highway 2 near Index, Washington. While most paddlers are out skiing, local legends Sam Grafton and Ben Kinsella drive straight to “the Sky” to satisfy their flood lust. In this video, presented by KAVU, the duo paddled the Sky at 33,000 CFS. The river, usually characterized by friendly Class IV boulder gardens, transforms into a raging torrent of icy grey big-water rapids.
