NRS and Forge Motion Pictures‘ new five-part short film series, Of Souls+Water, premiering this Saturday, April 28, isn’t your typical paddling flick. It actually tells a story (while still showing folks paddling the gnar too. Don’t worry).

To create Of Souls + Water, director Skip Armstrong scoured the paddling, rafting and surfing communities to film people like Erik Boomer, who was featured in the May issue of C&K for his and Jon Turk’s circumnavigation of Ellesmere Island and is the subject of  Souls+Water Episode I, “The Nomad,” which will be released for free on the NRS website this weekend. They filmed everywhere from The Sea of Cortez to the Pacific Northwest, using the latest and greatest in high-tech HD gadgetry.  And the end result is, frankly, pretty impressive.

“We didn’t want to just make another paddling movie,” says NRS Marketing Coordinator Mark Deming. “We wanted to capture the human connection with water, nature and adventure in a way that’s never been done. ”

Watch Episode 1 below, and each of the five episodes free on the NRS website as they’re released throughout the spring and summer.
