The second stage of the 2016 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup takes place June 10-12, at the site of the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Following its induction at the 1972 Munich Games, canoe slalom faced an immediate twenty year hiatus from the Olympic program. The Parc Olímpic del Segre in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain would provide the place for slalom’s re-welcoming during the 1992 Barcelona Games. In these Olympics, Team USA showed great success. Dana Chladek won the bronze in the women’s K-1. Joe Jacobi and Scott Strausbaugh captured gold (the only ever for the US in slalom) in the men’s C-2. And another C-2 – that of Lecky Haller and Jamie McEwan – finished fourth. For McEwan, who had won bronze in the C-1 at the ’72 Munich Games, it meant he nearly stood on the Olympic podium once again, twenty years apart.

This weekend, nearly twenty-four years since the Barcelona Games, the whitewater course in La Seu d’Urgell once again plays an Olympic role to Team USA. This time as preparation for the 2016 Rio Games. The characters have obviously changed: Michal Smolen in men’s K-1; Ashley Nee in women’s K-1; Casey Eichfeld in the men’s C-1; and a familiar name, McEwan in the C-2. Devin McEwan was just seven years old when his father chased down Olympic glory with canoe partner Lecky Haller at Segre. Now at thirty-one, the younger McEwan, with the help of his other C-2 half, Casey Eichfeld, will chase down one of his own. And just as his father’s had, Devin’s Olympic journey flows through the gates in La Seu d’Urgell.
