Rising Stars: Liam Fournier

18-year-old paddler and filmmaker

This video follows 18-year-old waterfall junkie Liam Fournier through a packed 2014 season of chasing whitewater around the globe. Fournier recently spent two years with World Class Kayak Academy, honing his paddling in places as far afield as China, Chile, and Nepal. On a post-graduation escapade, he ran the Grand Canyon of the Stikine before heading south to tear up rivers in Chile and Mexico.

Fournier began kayaking at 11 when his best friend Peter Thompson first took him out on the water. The two paddled together until Thompson tragically lost his life on the river in 2012. Thompson continues to be an inspiration for Fournier as he moves into an elite part of the paddling community.

Already an accomplished filmmaker as well, Fournier has numerous videos under his belt, as well as an internship with Rush Sturges, guru of River Roots.

Watching this action-packed clip, it’s easy to forget Fournier is only 18…until you see him twirling his nascent mustache in the final frames. Enjoy.
