After David Bowie passed away earlier this year, Los Angeles sea kayaker Gary Cziko was left thinking of the music icon’s “breakout song,” the 1969 classic Space Oddity. “Thinking of it,” says Cziko, “made it clear to me that it was perfect for a sea kayaking version.” Before Cziko hopped back on his surfski, he suited up to drop an indelible piece of paddling performance-art gold.

Commencing countdown life vest on…

Cziko’s full lyrics:
Dockmaster to sea kayak, Dockmaster to sea kayak
Eat your protein bar and put your helmet on
Dockmaster to sea kayak, Commencing countdown life vest on
Check your bilge pump and may God’s love be with you [three, two, one, castoff]
This is Dockmaster to sea kayak, You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose skirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the kayak if you dare
This is sea kayak to Dockmaster, I’m exiting the boat
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the waves look very different today
For here am I floating on the ocean, Far away from shore
The sea and sky are blue and there’s nothing I can do
Though I’ve paddled only a few hours, I’m feeling very ill
But I think my kayak knows which way to go
Tell my wife I just threw up–through my nose
Dockmaster to sea kayak, You forgot your paddle float so you can’t get back
Into your sea kayak
Can you hear me sea kayak? Can you hear me sea kayak? Can you . . .
. . . Here am I floating on the ocean, Far away from shore
The sea and sky are blue and there’s nothing I can do
