If you’re anything like me, you spend a lot of your day on the computer. While I try to pretend I’m doing important, life-enriching things online, that’s not always the case. So sometimes I need to break away from my Facebook feed and dig into a new subject. I don’t always have time to read a lengthy article, but putting on a short video while finishing my morning dishes gets the job done.
Enter TED Talks. We’ve all heard of them, but you may not realize there are several fantastic TED Talks given by world-renowned paddlers. Below are my top five picks, broken down the type of morale boost they offer.
1. Steve Fisher– For when you need help making big, scary, real-life decisions.
From paddling the highest volume whitewater in the world to dropping endless waterfalls, Steve Fisher knows something about taking risks. In his TED talk, he explains how he splits big risks into manageable parts. Similarly, we can break down overwhelming life decisions into easier-managed pieces.
2. Trip Jennings– To help you through an identity crisis.
Trip Jennings wanted to do something meaningful with his life, something that made an impact on the world. But when he contemplated leaving the professional kayaking circuit to become a researcher, he felt the pressure of a slight identity crisis. He talks about how he moved through this to begin his current job, which he loves more than he thought was possible.
3. Emily Jackson– When you need a confidence boost.
Emily’s talk is all about a life without compromise. She talks about growing up in a wild, kayaking family that traveled the country in an RV, putting adventure and passion above security. That experience taught her to focus on what’s important first and to shape her life around her priorities.
4. Chris Gragtmans– When you need to see the silver lining to a failure.
A few years ago Chris wrote an article that received a lot of attention, both negative and positive. He talks about how this experience taught him to come back from what may be perceived as a failure and to instead let it help him thrive.
5. Mark Kalch– When you need to get out of your own head.
Listen to Mark Kalch’s stories about expedition paddling and his current project of paddling the longest river on each continent and get inspired to explore the world.
So the next time you’re sipping coffee in the morning, click on one of these TED talks and get inspired to to hit the water this weekend or take that trip you’ve been dreaming about.
