From the Vault: Kayaking Baffin Island

Remembering the search for beluga in the August 1988 issue

The members of the Qajaqtuqtut expedition completed their trek across Baffin Island in hand-built Inuit-style kayaks on Saturday, Sept. 21. Reading dispatches of their adventures, we’re reminded of another group of kayakers who paddled a similar route 25 years ago. Written by Larry Rice and published in the August 1988 issue of Canoe & Kayak, “On the Trail of the White Whales of Helluland” follows a team of kayakers on a three-week search for beluga, smallest of the whales.
