With a plethora of islands and a perfect blend of open coast and sheltered water, the Maine coast seems purpose-built for sea kayakers. The Maine Island Trail Association (mita.org) administers the state’s 375 miles of coastline as a water trail with over 200 campsites and issues a comprehensive guidebook. Logistics are as basic as getting to the town of Stonington, the jumping-off point for numerous loop trips: Circumnavigate Deer Island or hop between Isle au Haut, Swans, Long and a handful of smaller islands on the outer coast. A week gives you time to see it all.
