Todd Wells of Mountain Mind Collective was on hand competing at this weekend's Rey del Rio Waterfall World Championships on the Cascadas de Agua Azul, organized by Altius Events in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas: "Quite possibly the most progressive event that has ever happened in whitewater kayaking," Wells writes of the unique format that combined time trials, boatercross, and judged contests into a vertical huck-off for some of the sport's best. In MMC's following Quick Flick clip, Wells captures a few of the colorful characters from the event's talented international roster of 18 invitees, which includes, in order of appearance: Galen Volckhausen (USA); Joel Kowalski (CAN); Sofia Reinoso (MEX); Dave Fusilli (USA); Ben Marr (CAN); Marcos Gallegos (CHI); Alec Vorhees (USA); Dane Jackson (USA); Iker Van Dusen (MEX); Gerd Serrasolses (ESP); and Kyle Hull (USA).
Read about how the competition shook out, and catch some of the highlights here, including Marr's back freeweel (at 55 seconds), Fusilli's "brown claw" (1:20), New Zealand's Sam Sutton going for a paddle-toss dive (1:47), Volckhausen's eddy-catch approach (2:28), and Pat Keller's winning run (2:48).
