Special Mention: Merced River
Threat: Cutting Wild & Scenic River protections
The Wild and Scenic Merced River is a special destination for paddlers, anglers, hikers, fish, and wildlife, including a very rare salamander. However, the river’s outstanding values are threatened by a proposal to raise the New Exchequer Dam, which would flood wilderness habitat in the surrounding area. Congress must halt legislative proposals to remove Wild and Scenic protections in order to raise this dam. It would ruin this special place for a very minor amount of storage capacity, and set a dangerous precedent for Wild and Scenic Rivers across the country.
