Washington kayaker Darren Albright boofs Rodeo Hole in Jacob’s Ladder, the signature rapid of Idaho’s North Fork Payette, during the 2012 North Fork Championship. The ground-breaking race, detailed by C&K Senior Editor Joe Carberry on p. 20, was the second stage in the six-event AWP Whitewater World Series. At the time of press, Albright was clinging to the lead as the top racer as the series moved to the next two stages in Europe. “The World Series makes it so the average person is like, ‘Holy shit, this is insane!’” says Rush Sturges, the current AWP number 5. “Our sport needs that kind of shock value.”
