Canon 5D MK III with a 16-35mm at 16mm 1/100 sec at f/5 – ISO 1000
Can you explain how you got this shot? It looks like it’s taken from a helicopter … but it’s not, right?
Ben Marr, James Byrd, Ryan Lucas and I felt particularly ambitious after reaching the Site Zed camp and decided to hike up the river valley to get a better view of the Grand Canyon of the Stikine. To our amazement we discovered a network of goat trails and a spectacular view of Site Zed. Benny and James held my legs as I lay down on my stomach and peered over to get the shot. Afterwards we took our sweet time and chilled on the canyon rim for a few hours until the sun began to set.
Looks like a hellava hike to get up there … What was the motivation?
With beta we had received from Stikine local Jules Domine we were keen to check out the upper reaches of the canyon. I am always searching for fresh shots and new perspectives of known landscapes, rapids, rivers, people, etc. We were also motivated to further explore the Stikine River Valley.
What are some of the challenges you face as a whitewater photographer?
In the expedition setting it can be very difficult to keep up with the flow of the team, maintain your safety and be a dedicated photographer at the same time. It is a difficult balance that requires a quick and efficient decision-making process. Sometimes I really want to take photos but I know that we have to keep moving. This is very hard for me and presents a huge challenge to capture moments. But at the same time, I really love the challenge it provides, which always keeps me on my toes photographically.
What’s next on your list of adventures?
Currently I am on a Tour De South America! I just spent a month in Peru with Aniol Serrasolses, Rafa Ortiz, Juan Antonio De Ugarte, Evan Garcia, Ryan Lucas and Albert Aixas. It was an incredible trip and now I have moved on to Colombia for some more expedition kayaking and adventures! This winter I plan to go back to North America and focus on ski photography for several months.
