Outdoor Retailer Moves to back to August
Dek: Organizer announces discounts for paddlesports companies
San Diego, Oct. 1 – This week Nielsen Business Media and the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) Paddle Council announced that Outdoor Retailer Summer Market (OR) will move from July to the first week in August 2010. Boat exhibitors also will receive discounted booth space, while paddlesports will have a more prominent location in the Salt Palace convention center.
The changes came in response to a meeting of paddling manufacturers and retailers on the OR floor July 23, in which many paddlesports exhibitors expressed frustration with the July dates, the cost of attending the show, and a number of other issues. Earlier that week, Canoe and Kayak publisher Jim Marsh had announced plans to organize a paddling-only tradeshow in September, 2010 in Minneapolis. In light of Nielsen’s rapid and substantive response to paddlesport industry concerns, Marsh announced at a meeting of paddlesports executives last night that he would cancel plans for the Minneapolis show.
“Ten weeks ago I don’t think any of us dreamed that this would happen,” Marsh said. “My hat is off to Nielsen and the Paddle Council.”
The date shift came as a surprise because Nielsen, which organizes the annual tradeshow, already had contracted a July show date for 2010. The company was able to renegotiate that contract to move the date to the first week of August. Outdoor Retailer show director Kenji Haroutunian expects the later date will benefit channels outside paddlesports as well, because fewer retailers are ready to write orders in July than August.
In addition to the later show date, paddlesports companies will be given a more central location in the Salt Palace in 2010 and a substantial discount on space used to exhibit boats.
Space devoted exclusively to boats will be discounted 40 percent. OIA members will receive an addition 8 percent discount in 2010, rising to 10 percent in 2011. The paddlesports demo day will move to Jordanelle State Park.
Nielson also is working to merge its annual Fly Fishing Retailer show with OR. If that move is approved by the American Fly Fishin g Trade Association, fly exhibitors will occupy a space adjacent to the new paddlesports area in the Salt Palace.
The OIA Paddle Council is a 12-person advisory group including representatives of six retailers from different parts of North America and six manufacturers of various sizes. The council’s first goal is to foster growth in the paddling industry, particularly among young people.
