ARCATA, Calif., (Nov. 2, 2010) – An international community of paddlers are gathering in Seattle, Wash. this week to celebrate the first annual Greenland Week, hosted by the Kayak Academy. Kokatat, the 39 year-old independent paddlewear company, is honored to support this event that is inspired by the cultural heritage of kayaking.
In 1985, the country of Greenland launched the Greenland National Qajaq Championships. The event was designed to spur a growing interest and knowledge of the kayaking culture to the younger generations of the native Inuit. Over the decades, the event has matured into the world’s premier traditional kayaking competition. To carry-on the event’s enthusiasm, Kayak Academy is proud to offer a U.S. located competition.
The week’s schedule includes traditional kayaking skills clinics, lessons and training sessions from Saturday, Oct. 30 through Sunday, Nov. 7 at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, Wash. The official competition will take place, Friday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 7. Events of the competition are all modeled after events from the original Greenland National Qajaq Championship, including: rope gymnastics, six-mile kayak race, harpoon throwing, and a rolling competition. For more information and details about each event, please visit the Greenland Week Schedule.
“These traditional skills have served kayakers since the birth of kayaking as a way for native peoples to hunt and survive on the water,” said, Kayak Academy’s Barb Gronseth. “This year’s Greenland Week is designed to celebrate those traditions, and give paddlers a chance to learn and compete using techniques that continue to prove their great value and effectiveness on the water.”
Registration for competitors is $160 and includes a T-shirt, awards and the Saturday dinner. For more information about the event, please visit the Kayak Academy website or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
