For the west coast saltwater angler, using a spinning reel offshore used to be a good way to catch some ridicule or at the very least, some friendly ribbing. Those days are clearly in the past as innovative new construction paired with the use of spectra lines have made spinners legitimate offshore workhorses. To that, the rest of the coastal fishing country including the east coast, Gulf of Mexico, and kayak-fishing community utters a collective "duh" as they have had a spot in their angling arsenals forever.

Naturally, a lot of credit has to be given to Penn for leading this charge by continuing in it's tradition of crafting bullet-proof reels designed for oceanic abuse. At ICAST 2014, Penn will be unveiling the Battle II spinning reel, which is a new and improved version of the original Battle reel which stood as a best-seller in its own right.

There are eight Battle II spinning reels ranging in size from 1000-8000, and they added a 2500 to the lineup which is perfect for inshore and light braid applications.

The best part, is the Battle II will be offered at an MSRP from $99 to $129 depending on the size, so having a couple of them in your kayak in different sizes won't break the bank.
