The premium cooler category has become a crowded one, seemingly overnight. At ICAST, I nearly tripped on a new one at every turn. I expect Outdoor Retailer will be much the same.

Every company making premium coolers claims to offer superior insulation and epic durability. For me, the most obvious differentiation comes on the feature side.

That makes Orion Coolers particularly interesting. The recently launched brand is made by fishing kayak builder Jackson Kayak in Tennessee. And just like a Coosa, Kilroy or the upcoming Kraken, these things are packed with fishing features.

A non-skid standing pad comes standard, as do aluminum tie-downs that double as bottle openers and aluminum ratcheting handles. There’s one more standout that earns Orion Coolers a second strong look: molded-in YakAttack accessory track systems. Rod holders, camera mounts, etc. slide right in.

I’ve yet to see pricing. Kayak Fish will search them out for a closer look at Outdoor Retailer. According to a promotional sheet, Orion Coolers will come in 26-, 45-, 65- and mondo 85-quart sizes in forest camo, green hornet or a sort of tan color. They also appear to come with grab handles, non-skid feet and drain plugs.
