Beastly: Abu Garcia’s Newest Revo is Built for Monster Slaying

ICAST 2014 doesn’t kick off until July 15, but there’s so much product news we’re getting a head start. Come back every day for more, and follow our Facebook feed closely for breaking bulletins from the show floor.

The Abu Garcia Beast baitcaster, new for 2014, is a menacing glossy black. At a glance you can tell it isn’t meant for messing around. It’s a brawny monster. The cranking handle is oversized, with chunky EVA power knobs. The spool is deep enough to string 180 yards of 30-pound braid. Maximum drag is listed as a head-turning 22 pounds.

Abu’s Kevin Jarnagin says the Beast was built for throwing big baits and ripping tough fish from heavy cover. It is also built to last, with titanium coated sideplates, a corrosion-resistant X-Craftic alloy frame and Carbon Matrix drag system.

A throw of that big handle picks up 29 inches of line on a full spool, at a quick 7.1:1 ratio. The bearings are Abu’s High Performance Corrosion Resistant variety. The Infinii casting brake is adjustable without opening the reel. The Beast is available in both left- and right-hand models.

Abu Garcia’s line of powerhouse Revo baitcasters earned a permanent place in my quiver from their introduction. The tolerances are tight, they cast well, they are as tough and durable as anything I’ve employed on a kayak, and the drags are strong enough (22 pounds of pressure) these reels are a match for anything inshore or in the fresh. While I haven’t had a chance to fish the Beast quite yet, it looks like another worthy addition of the Revo family.
