The North Face VE-25-Kayak Shelters
North Face VE-25
($569, thenorthface.com)
11 lbs., 48 sq ft, 3P/4S, Vestibule 16 sq ft
This is my go-to tent for ocean kayaking. An elegant dome design with the highest quality of any tent I am personally aware of. If weather is a potential factor and you’re well away from civilization for a period of time, you can’t do better than one of these. I don’t know how they can charge nearly a C-note less than competing models; it simply has everything. The VE-25 has a roomy interior tricked-out with plentiful mesh pockets (high and low and no saggers). Two zip open vents at the ceiling, two doors with room for half a dozen medium dry bags in the front and empty dry bags and boots in the rear. The 2012 model has handy snow/sand flaps on both vestibules. It can sleep three if necessary and makes a good couples tent. The taut pitched VE-25 has a bright gold body and fly, making a warm inviting light inside the tent. New models have a couple of white panels as well. Urethane window on fly. Fabric snow stakes (included) are a new twist and I have yet to try them.
