RETURN OF THE LONGBOAT

The Destination Torngat expedition wasn't your garden-variety whitewater mission. Here was a crew of paddlers exploring one of our planet's last great wildernesses using canoe routes pioneered decades ago. Instead of portaging around the many cataracts and waterfalls, however, they were charging straight over them. The team pioneered a new approach to river travel, made possible by a novel class of whitewater kayaks. The Torngat boys used Jackson's Karma Unlimited and Liquidlogic's Remix XP, but a half-dozen companies now make similar longboats: Eleven or 12 feet long, plenty of space for gear, lean lines that chew through the miles and handle big water rapids with ease. Most of us won't use boats like these to explore a chunk of northern Labrador the size of Maryland, but there's no better craft on the market today for a self-support on the Grand Canyon. — Jeff Moag
