Hilleberg Staika
($755, hilleberg.com)
9 lbs., 2P/4S, 36 sq ft, Vestibule 19 sq ft

The Staika is an elegant scan-style dome tent.  Tent and floor are attached and go up as a unit, which is handy in a storm.  On the other hand, it denies the option to run without a fly.  The Staika is a paradigm of simplicity and with a small footprint we stuck it in a small clearing under a windswept spruce.  Two doors and two vestibules are ergonomically designed such that you can easily access gear in the vestibule from your sleeping bag.  Three identical poles and clip pitch are straight forward.  Attach the roof vent cap that reminds me of a conical Asian hat, or coolie hat, and you’re good to go.  In a prior experience with a Hille tent I found more drape to the inner tent than I would have liked, not so with the Staika.
