Feathered Friends Hummingbird UL 20
Not EN tested; about 20 degrees in real-world use. Fill: 900 down. 27oz ($470, featheredfriends.com)
The Feathered Friends Hummingbird UL is the lightest bag in our the test at one pound, 11 ounces, and one of the warmest. We found it quite comfortable below freezing in real-world use thanks to 900 fill power traditional down and no dead air space. A large part of the warmth factor is that this is the smallest bag. It’s slim cut makes it hard for me (only 5 feet 6 inches) to change socks inside. The materials have a very nice, soft tactile feel and there is great attention to detail with a snap closure to secure the zipper. The draft collar and mummy hood use the same style round cord for both and work well.
In typical use, I’d sleep with the bag unzipped, making it like a quilt and very comfortable. This works well down to the mid 30’s. If you’re regularly sleeping in temperatures around or below freezing this might not be the bag for you; it’s a very snug fit when zipped up, hindering sleepability.
Caveat: Claustrophobic for larger people, not durable water repellant coated and traditional (not dry) down.
Best for: Expeditions with lots of hiking or portaging, and smaller people in dry conditions.
