Magtogoek, meaning Walking River, is one of the oldest names for the mighty Saint Lawrence River. Now, the name also refers to a graphic design available on all of Abitibi’s Scott and Bluewater model canoes—one of three new color schemes from the Canadian canoe builder that call attention to endangered waters. (The others are Timiskaming, after the lake bordering Ontario and Quebec; and Kinojevis, commemorating the river of the same name.) The choice of graphics fits the philosophy of Abitibi canoes, which prides itself on “design made affordable” with an emphasis on custom-designed canoes and sustainability from start to finish.
