In 2005, a midlife resolution launched Wendy Killoran’s transformation into a sea kayak heroine. The slender Ontario grade school teacher spent part of that summer paddling around the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, covering 400 miles in 15 days. The next year she took a leave of absence from work for a 2,000-mile circumnavigation of Newfoundland. She took more time off in 2007 to circumnavigate Sicily and Sardinia. When she was invited to speak at a sea kayak symposium in Spain—and spend a long weekend paddling there—she was out of vacation. So she called in sick and got on the plane. Transformation complete.
