Team photographer captures moments from the fastest Amazon source-to sea descent
Last year West Hansen, 51, notched the fastest source-to-sea descent of the Amazon river system, starting from a novel source high in the Rio Mantaro basin. Hansen led a diverse team of Texas marathon canoeists, Peruvian river guides and international whitewater stars on a 109-day, 4,103-mile journey from the high Andes to the Atlantic ocean. In this special C&K Flipbook, expedition photographer Erich Schlegel shares images from this extraordinary expedition. Hansen’s historic descent, and rival adventurer Rocky Contos’s discovery of a potential new source of the world’s biggest river, are featured in the June, 2013 issue of Canoe & Kayak.
