“It was like something hit my kayak with a baseball bat,” Joey Nocchi of Paso Robles told KSBY TV in the days following his sudden shark smack-down. Nocchi said he was vaulted five feet into the air by the impact against the bottom of his blue Cobra Fish N Dive kayak.

Nocchi was fishing just offshore of Leffingwell Landing in Cambria, California with friends. Cambria is a few dozen miles south of Big Sur, but not too far from one of the state’s larger elephant seal rookeries.

Nocchi said his friends saw the shark come right over his upturned kayak, coming close enough it brushed the stunned angler. “I had my hands back but his tail came across me and I felt his skin on my hands and it was a pretty crazy, eerie feeling,” he told KSEE TV.
