Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival Slated for March, 2008
The 22nd Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival (SCKSF) will take to the waves March 14-16, 2008 in Santa Cruz, California.
The event attracts some of the the best kayak wave magicians on the planet to Santa Cruz’s famous surf break, Steamer Lane.
Adding to this years synergy is the competitive fires stoked at the October 2007 World Surf Kayak Championships in Mundaka, Spain. Attending international competitors from that event will be aiming to challenge the top kayak surfers of California at their famous home break.
During 2007′s competition the surf gods provided classic smooth and glassy swells from 8 to 12 feet – perfect conditions for epic rides and acrobatic magic. Festival sponsors are hoping for a repeat as the stage is set for this classic international kayak surf competition.
World-renowned Steamer Lane point break in Santa Cruz will be the site for all events during the March 14-16 festival weekend. The cliff top park along West Cliff Drive overlooking Steamer Lane will provide front row viewing for photographers and thousands of spectators, as well as contest judges.
The SCKSF is two contests in one. There is an expert event at the Steamer Lane Site that can produce over 15 foot wave heights, while at the same time a 1/2 mile away there are gentle 3-5 foot swells for novice and Intermediate events at the Cowells Site.
The SCKSF serves to expand the kayak surfing community by inviting experts as well as intermediates, novices and the manufacturing industry to mingle and share their knowledge of surfing paddle powered boats.
Expert Classes are a three day event with final heats on Sunday. Novice and Intermediate Classes are held as a double round robin format, surfing both Saturday and Sunday. The final day will close the event with an awards celebration and drawing for kayaking gear.
The new West Coast Surf Kayaking Association is planning pre-contest surf clinics to be staffed by former members of the 2005 World Champion US West Coast Team led by Rusty Sage. There will be free surf clinics for juniors (under 21 yrs.) Two sessions will be held Saturday, March 8. Sign-ups are limited to 12 juniors each session and registration will be taken at Adventure Sports Unlimited, phone, 831-458-3648 or e-mail, email@example.com.
For 2008′s contest there are additional surfing categories. There will be a Masters Open Category in an “everything goes” HP format and a Jr. Novice Plastic Production Class.
Manufacturers will have display booths to provide contestants and spectators opportunities to see and touch the hottest new kayaks and gear from a variety of manufacturers. Food booths and a sound system with great music and play-by-play contest coverage will keep the festivities moving. The festival will continue during nightly town parties featuring food and drink and videos of surf kayaking highlights.
Volunteers are needed for the 22nd Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival. There are many opportunities for you to participate in this wonderful event. Shifts are two hour time blocks throughout each day. Please let us know the day, time, and what you would like to do. If you cannot commit to a definite day/time, please come by the volunteer table and sign up — there’s always room for more volunteers! Looking forward to seeing you at the site!
