Santa Cruz Surf Kayak Festival 2007
The best surf kayakers in the world will be in attendance to compete with the American team that won the 2005 World Championships and those US West upstarts that took the World Cup in Portugal.
Competitors will be here to hone their skills at the internationally acclaimed Steamer Lane break in preparation for the next World Competition in the fall of 2007 in Mundaka, Spain.
We have added a Masters Open Category in an “everything goes” HP format and a Jr. Novice Plastic Production Class to stimulate that end of the spectrum. This event is termed a festival in that it invites experts as well as intermediates, novices and the manufacturing industry to mingle and share their knowledge of surfing paddle powered vehicles.
The SCKSF is two contests in one. We have an expert event at the Steamer Lane Site that can produce 15-foot plus wave heights, while at the same time a mile away we can have gentle 3-5 foot swells for Novice and Intermediate events at the Cowells Site. Expert Classes are a three day event, final heats on Sunday. Novice and Intermediate Classes are held as a double round robin format surfing both Saturday and Sunday. The final day will close the event with an awards celebration and drawing for high tech water toys.
The new West Coast Surf Kayaking Association is planning pre-contest surf clinics to be staffed by former members of the 2005 World Champion US West Coast Team, structured to get more athletes excited about kayak surfing. Dates will be posted on our website and announcements will be sent to local clubs and shops.
