Orca Answer
Reader Brett wrote in with the story behind the video clip of a kayaker swamped by an Orca whale that then rolls up.
He writes:
Apparently, the orca roll video was created digitally for a Korean Powerade commercial. You can see the whole thing here.
I found this on paddling.net’s discussion forum where the contributors pointed to such giveaways as the orca being too big, that a glancing blow would have somersaulted the kayak, that a direct hit would have killed the paddler and severely damaged the kayak and that an intact kayak would not have stayed down that long unless dragged down to a considerable depth, in which case it would have exited the water like a missile upon resurfacing.
We thought it was too good to be true, but actually some of us here at Canoe & Kayak are relieved – one less thing to worry about out on Puget Sound
