In its sixth annual incarnation, the Cali BurnFest went off in early October with a Friday, “big-air expression session” kayak surf competition at Camel Rock, north of Arcata, Calif., followed by a Saturday creek race on the technical Class IV Burnt Ranch Gorge section of the Trinity River. The mass-start downriver mayhem for over 20 paddlers was split in two divisions: long and short kayaks, plus a small handful of rafters, finishing with a 10-foot drop. The race is the final event of the Western Whitewater Championship Series. Check the Oregon Rafting Team site for more details on the series, and caliproduct.blogspot.com for more details on the race.
The event benefitted Matt Thomas, who was paralyzed from the chest down in 2009 mountain bike accident and is recovering with Project Walk. — Dave Shively
