Voting ends at midnight (PST) tonight (Monday, July 8) for the 2013 Canoe & Kayak Awards presented by Verizon. At last week’s tally, many of this year’s nominees were still neck and neck, so we extended the voting to give you a final chance to make your voice heard.
Please help us split hairs to make some of the following tough choices:
Do you pick a Male Paddler who notched the first complete descent of the Grand Canon of the Stikine, or one who won back-to-back Whitewater Grand Prix victories?
Who’s a more deserving Female Paddler, a five-time Green Race champ or a slalom crossover who dominated the Grand Prix?
How about the recipient of a $2,500 award presented by Shred Ready to be applied toward the winning Expedition of the Year team’s next big trip? Is it the first top-to-bottom descent of the world’s steepest section of whitewater, four months and 2,600 miles across Canada’s northern territories, or is it a toss-up between two Amazon expeditions: the fastest source-to-sea, or top-to-bottom explorations of the mighty river’s four principal tributaries, including a 500-mile first D from its newly discovered most distant source (by the guy who discovered it)?
Check out the everyday paddlers embarking on extraordinary journeys who have earned a nod with nomination in our Spirit of Adventure Award, from young women rounding Lake Michigan in a dugout, to two men paddling the entire Mississippi River system (and then some), not to mention a couple on a 12,000-mile, cross-continent paddling and education odyssey.
And then take a look at the nominated filmmakers pushing the envelope in visual storytelling now, as well as the paddlers pushing hard for different reasons—cleaning rivers, teaching children, preserving traditions, healing wounded soldiers, and saving lives—who are up for this year’s Paddle with Purpose philanthropy award.
The PHOTO OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY BODY GLOVE FOOTWEAR runs through July 14. The photo contest is hosted on FACEBOOK to find three photographers from our audience. They will then compete with the seven remaining photographers picked by C&K staff as finalists. Gallery prints of the finalists will be displayed at the award show, where attendees will choose the winner.
